Black ice is an extremely dangerous thing, with drivers needing to be particularly careful on bridges and overpasses. Cold air will hit these structures both from the top as well as the bottom, causing them to freeze more quickly than regular roads.

A perfect example of that would be what occurred earlier this month in Midwest City, Oklahoma, at Sooner Rd and I-40. Thankfully, no life threatening injuries were sustained, as per the description of the video.

The crash happens at roughly the 5-second mark of the clip, as the SUV begins to slide towards a box truck on the nearby lane. It’s hard to say if there was any contact between the two, but since we don’t hear anything, we’re inclined to say that there wasn’t.

In any case, the worst was to follow as the Explorer then impacted a stationary vehicle which at the time was being investigated by a highway patrol officer, who did sustain injuries. They should probably consider themselves lucky.

As for the driver of the SUV, it’s possible that more could have been done so as to not completely lose control of the vehicle, but it’s usually easy to think this way from behind a keyboard. Maybe a very skilled driver could have handled the situation better, but that’s still a “maybe”.

We do know one thing though. Climbing on the brakes during the slide was next to useless. In such situations, it’s actually recommended that you use the throttle in order to regain control, because that will at least give your tires a better chance to grip something.
