Ford is paying tribute to the original Cobra Jet that dominated the drag strips in the late 1960s with the new and all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet.

The factory drag racer with zero-emission propulsion is a prototype built by Ford Performance, with help from partners such as MLe Racecars, Watson Engineering, AEM EV and Cascadia.

An absolute beast at the drag strip, where it can run the quarter mile in the low 8 seconds, with an exit speed of over 170 mph (274 km/h), the Mustang Cobra Jet boasts more than 1,400 horsepower (1,420 PS / 1,044 kW) and 1,100 pound-feet (1,491 Nm) of instant torque.

Since this is a prototype, Ford hasn’t released any details surrounding the electric powertrain and batteries. However, it did state that the drag car will celebrate its world debut later this year at a drag racing event where it will demonstrate its skills against the clock and, who knows, many other fast machines.

“We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now”, said Ford Performance Motorsports’ Global Director, Mark Rushbrook. “This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports.”
