If you’re one of the early 2020 Toyota Supra owners, you probably don’t think too highly of the Japanese automaker right now.

Don’t get us wrong, the car is great but how would you feel if you supported the launch of a new model by being one of the first owners, only to find that said model received significant upgrades only one year later?

Surely that should feel like a slap in the face for some 2020 Supra owners, given that Toyota has given the 2021 model a hefty power upgrade. On paper, the 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine now makes 382 HP and 368 lb-ft (498 Nm) of torque.

That’s a 47 HP increase over the 2020 Supra, which is officially rated at 335 HP and 365 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque. But is the power difference between the two models really that big? Car&Driver wanted to find out so they took their long-term 2020 Supra and the new 2021 Supra to Livernois Motorsports & Engineering in Dearborn Heights, Michigan and let them duke it out on the dyno.

The 2020 Supra’s performance on the dyno

As it turns out, the 2020 Supra produces more power than advertised, with the measurements reading an impressive 346 horsepower at the wheels (WHP) along with 409 lb-ft of torque. Taking driveline losses into consideration, this means the 2020 model delivers way more than the official 335 HP. Unfortunately, Car&Driver does not reveal the exact power output at the crank, but it’s surely more than that.

Let the dyno-drum roll on the 2021 Supra

As for the 2021 model, the dyno test reveals it delivers an impressive 388 HP and 421 lb-ft at the wheels, or 6 HP more than the official rating at the crank, and 42 hp more than last year’s car at the wheels. “Remove the driveline losses, and the engine appears to be capable of 400 horsepower at the crank,” says C&D. “The dyno put the new engine’s advantage at 42 horsepower, so it’s right in line with Toyota’s 47-hp claim,” the magazine concluded.
