There was a time just a few short years ago where the Lamborghini Aventador, particularly in SV guise, was one of the quickest and most ferocious supercars on the market. But that was then and this is now – and things have changed.

During a series of performance tests, CarWow pitted a Ferrari 488 Pista and McLaren 720S against an Aventador SV to see which would come out on top. On paper, it should be very evenly matched, but in reality, it is quite clear which car is the fastest and which is the slowest.

In the first drag race from a standing start, the rear-wheel drive 720S and 488 Pista struggle for traction while the Aventador S rockets off the line thanks to its all-wheel drive system. This provides it with a significant head-start and the Ferrari and McLaren are only able to pass it after the Lamborghini driver hit a pothole and let off the throttle. In the second and most telling race, the Aventador again has an advantage off the line, but before long, the McLaren and Ferrari speed past the Lamborghini. Mere moments later, the 720S surges ahead of the 488 Pista, even though both cars have a claimed 710 hp.

Two rolling races are also held. In the first, the McLaren easily wins while in the second, the Ferrari takes the victory – but it jumped off the start. The SV, meanwhile, was left in the dust.

What’s particularly amazing about the performance offered up by the Ferrari 488 Pista and McLaren 720S is that, in theory, they belong in the niche below the Aventador and rival the Huracan. Then again, the Aventador is the oldest of the three, and this test shows how rapidly the ‘junior’ supercar segment has evolved.
