The new Chevrolet Corvette Z51 faced the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 at the Virginia International Raceway, in the hands of MotorTrend, who put professional racing driver Randy Pobst behind the wheel of both cars.

Boasting different layouts yet offering similar performance for over $80,000 as tested, the two super sports models went across the finish line in around two minutes.

Now, one of them was obviously faster. Care to know which one? Stick around, as we’ll get to that part after taking a look at the official spec sheets to better understand what they’re capable of.

The new Mustang Shelby GT500 packs a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that puts out 760 HP (771 PS / 567 kW) and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) of torque. That’s good enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) of 3.5 seconds and a quarter mile in less than 11 seconds.

The Mustang may hold the high ground in terms of power, but the Corvette C8 is lighter and boasts a mid-engine layout. Its 6.2-liter LT2 V8 is good for 495 HP (502 PS / 369 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) with the Z51 Performance Package, and despite being less powerful, it is faster in the 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint, which is dispatched in less than three seconds. Officially, though, the C8 Vette does the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds, with an exit speed of 121 mph (195 km/h).

So, care to place a little bet as to which one is a more proper track weapon?
