If you’re a steampunk fan, or just a fan of all things retro, you’ll probably like this 1980 BMW R100 RS motorcycle, which has been created by Dirk Oehlerking of Kingston Customs.

It’s called the Good Ghost and it is part of Oehlerking’s Phantom series, which also includes the White and the Black Phantom. Unlike the other models, though, the Good Ghost features a retro streamliner appearance, covering its entire body.

Underneath the full length aluminum cladding lies an old school BMW twin-cylinder boxer engine, and no changes were made to the original chassis of the R100 RS. By the way, the cladding, which weighs just 21 kg, the shift paddle and the foot brake lever were all hand made.

The front boasts a single headlight, watching over BMW’s iconic kidney grille, which is as tall as on some of the company’s modern day cars. Then there’s the leather seat which extends all the way to the handle bars and features an incorporated gauge cluster.

Another thing that’s definitely not stock is the fuel tank, which had to be shaped according to the bike’s design, while the exhaust manifold was made from stainless steel.

What’s really cool about the Good Ghost is the fact that it isn’t just for show, as it actually features plenty of storage space. Lift the seat and you’ll see a compartment for storing a bottle of wine and a glass, while the corkscrew and a spare spark-plug are stowed away in the lift mechanism.

Furthermore, the two flaps on either side of the rear wheel hold the tool kit and a selection of old silverware, respectively. You could definitely take this bike on a nice long road trip.

“The most interesting, exciting part of my work was the design. Designing a gentleman racer that completes the trilogy, that is the special Art of this motorcycle,” says Oehlerking.

“I started to build a cladding with wire frame and tape, which I then coated with cardboard and paste, so I created design and style. I didn’t want to sit behind a fairing in the motorcycle, I wanted to ride the motorcycle. I hid an original BMW R100RS under the fairing, frame and technology all original, I only used a Monolever damper. Like the White and Black Phantom, I placed the carburetor behind the fairing Kingston Hand Made.”

Here’s a rundown of all the parts that went into this motorcycle: Metzeler ME tires, Fehling handlebar clip, universal headlights, old school taillight, Kingston instrumentation, the custom leather seat, BMW running boards, YSS damper and a K&N air filter.

As for performance, the engine has a capacity of 971 cc and an output of 72 HP. Additionally, the bike weighs 179 kg (394 lbs) while standing 272 cm (107 inches) long and 112 cm (44 inches) tall.

The Good Ghost was commissioned by the Haas Moto Museum in Dallas, where it will go on display. Its creator however hopes that one day he’ll be able to ride it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
