Only two days after BMW officially unveiled the all-new 2021 M3 Sedan and 2021 M4 Coupe, two fully undisguised M3 final development prototypes have been spotted on the streets of Munich.

Normally, that would not be newsworthy since we already know what the high-performance sedan looks like from the official photos. However, the M3 G80 is special because it features one controversial design feature and people are curious what the car looks like on the street without the special visual effects of press photos.

Yes, we’re referring to the gargantuan kidney grilles, which on European-spec models are split in half by the front license plate. One of the cars featured a striking Sao Paulo Yellow exterior finish, while the other drove around wearing a more mundane white paint.

As you can see, the BMW roundels on the bonnet and boot lid are the only censored elements on these prototypes. That’s a bit odd seeing as the press photos featured the same old logo and we’re not aware of a logo redesign coming up.

Now, there’s no doubt that seeing the M3 G80 in the metal is the best way of forming an opinion about the design, but we believe these real-life photos are the next best thing to that. Maybe the styling has grown on this author, but the kidney grilles do not seem that out of place in these shots.

As for the rest of the car, it looks exactly how you expected a brand new M3 to look like. It’s got more visual muscle courtesy of the flared wheel arches and beefier body kit featuring an aggressive front bumper and an equally menacing rear bumper dominated by a big diffuser and quad exhausts.

Over to you now because we can’t wait to hear your opinion on what the 2021 BMW M3 looks like in real life.
