The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante and Tesla Model S Performance are entirely different vehicles, competing in vastly different segments of the market and appealing to very different customers. Nevertheless, AutoTrader decided to pit them against each other.

The first test is a traditional quarter-mile drag race. We all know just how accelerative the Model S Performance is off the line, so it comes as no surprise that it gets the better launch of the two. In fact, Rory Reid got a rather horrible launch in the DBS Superleggera, spinning up the rear tires and appearing to not set off any quicker than you would in a hot hatch. No quarter-mile times we provided.

It is the second test that is the more entertaining as it is a rolling race that suits the Aston Martin better. From 60 mph (96 km/h), the instant torque of the Tesla allows it to get a slight jump over the DBS Superleggera, but as the speeds build, the Aston Martin starts to reel it back in, although not in time for the finish line.

The final race sees the duo sprint off the line to 100 mph (160 km/h) before the drivers jump on the anchors and try to bring them to a stop. We won’t spoil the result of this test, but it is very close and well worth watching.
