Ford styling might be changing in the coming years, as a changing of the guard is underway in the design department. Blue Oval veteran Moray Callum is retiring, and Renault’s Anthony Lo has been named as his successor.

Although Lo’s portfolio is exciting, Callum’s is nothing to sniff at. His career started at Ford in 1995 (albeit through Mazda), he led the design of the 1999 Super Duty, the 2011 Explorer, the 2015 Mustang, and the Ford GT.

His influence continues, though. His pencil is all over the new Bronco, and the new F-150, and the Mach-E. The three designs that, in many ways, represent Ford’s past, present, and future. And that’s no accident, according to Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product platform and operations officer.

“Moray’s influence is seen on streets around the globe,” said Thai-Tang. “He brought and sustained a design vision and leadership to studios – including Ghia in Italy and Mazda in Japan, in addition to Ford and Lincoln – that has elevated the beauty, meaning and function of cars, trucks and SUVs for millions of customers.”

But Ford is in experienced hands with Anthony Lo. Although he currently works with Renault, Lo did spend some time with Ford’s cross-town rival, GM. Admittedly, that didn’t mean much time in Detroit, because he was Director of Advanced Design for General Motors Europe from 2004 until 2010. There, he oversaw several Opel and Vauxhall projects, as well as some Saab projects, like the Aero X.

In 2010, he moved to France, with Renault, where he spearheaded the “Cycle of Life” design strategy. Per Renault, that led to several wild concept cars like the “Dezir (Paris 2010), Captur, R-Space (Geneva 2011), Frendzy (Frankfurt 2011), Twin’Z (Milan 2013), Twin’Run (Monaco 2013) and Initiale Paris (Frankfurt 2013).”

“Our industry is evolving more rapidly than ever, and Ford will win the trust of customers by staying on the leading edge of that curve,” Thai-Tang said. “Anthony is a world-class design leader with an exemplary global track record. We’re excited to have him lead our Design organization as we accelerate the creation of connected, intelligent and increasingly electrified products.”
