There are few things worse than getting caught up in a pileup and in the city of Nanjing, China, that’s exactly what happened to 12 unfortunate drivers.

It’s not unusual to hear about massive pileups, particularly on snow-covered roads, as we’ve published a number of stories about them over the years. What makes this pileup particularly interesting is the fact that all 12 cars involved remained in a perfectly straight line, creating what could be considered as the automotive equivalent of the human centipede.

Involved in the pileup are a handful of locally-made cars as well as imports including a BMW SUV, a Mercedes CLA, a Honda Civic, and what appears to be a Mazda3. The vehicle at the very front is a white Mazda CX-5 and it looks to have only suffered a tiny bit of damage to its rear bumper.  Others weren’t as fortunate as many have extensive damage to both their front and rear ends.

We’d be intrigued to know how the insurance companies would deal with the incident. Quite often, if you rear-end another vehicle, you are determined to be at fault. By that logic, each driver involved may have to pay for the rear fascia repairs of the car they hit while having their own rear fascia repairs paid for by the driver that hit them.
