With the Taycan, Porsche made its first step towards a (mostly) electrified future. The Macan premium compact SUV is going electric for the next generation, a Cayenne EV could also be in the pipeline, and it appears that the 718 Boxster might be on the same list too.

The Stuttgart company’s entry-level open-top sports car, together with the Cayman coupe, might gain an electric drivetrain, which will be offered alongside the ICE-powered variants. Car & Driver believes the Boxster EV (name unconfirmed) will be previewed by a concept and it could be based on a new platform, different than the one used in the upcoming Macan EV.

Electric prototypes of the current generation have been made, according to Porsche’s executive board member for development, Michael Steiner, but they were deemed too heavy. Weight is very important as the EV models should drive just as good as the gas-powered versions. The straight-line performance of the electric Boxster and Cayman should be similar to their petrol brethren, with the quickest of the bunch expected to hit the 60 mph (96 km/h) mark in a little over 3 seconds.

Porsche tested the waters with electric prototypes of the Boxster 10 years ago. One had a single-motor, rear-wheel drive set-up, and the other one featured a dual-motor layout and all-wheel drive. A report dating back to 2019 claimed that a hybrid tester was built too, so the automaker has already considered an all-electric Boxster.
