You no longer have to own a GM product to receive OnStar services. The mobile app will now be available to anyone in the U.S. and Canada with a compatible Apple or Android smartphone.

OnStar Guardian was first introduced in July 2020 as an extension to the OnStar service, available natively in GM vehicles, that owners could take with them on their smartphones. Now anyone with a compatible device can download the OnStar Guardian app through their respective app stores.

The service offers Mobile Crash Response, which uses the sensors in your smartphone to determine if you’ve had an accident. If it detects one, it will automatically alert an advisor who can call your local emergency services to help you.

It will also have other functions for slightly less cataclysmic situations, such as a breakdown or flat tire. With roadside assistance, you can call for help getting a new tire, a jump, or help with any number of situations that might arise.

There are also services like Location Status, which gives users the ability to save and share favorite locations on the app’s map and receive notifications about arrivals and departures of friends and family.

“With the expanded launch of OnStar Guardian, OnStar’s key safety features are now available to keep more Canadians safe and secure beyond their vehicles,” said Mike Speranzini, director of Global Connected Services & Customer Experience. “OnStar helps people across this country every day in amazing ways and our members and their loved ones can bring the power of OnStar with them, wherever they go to feel protected and connected.”

Plans start at $14.99 and run all the way up to $49.99 a month depending on the number of services you need. OnStar is also donating $1 to the Alzheimers Association for every new download in June.
