The Porsche Taycan Turbo S has set a new EV production car record around The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia.

The circuit’s 7.7 km GT Circuit layout makes it the second-longest permanent racing circuit anywhere in the world, behind only the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Sitting behind the wheel of the Taycan Turbo S for the lap was Porsche Track Experience chief driving instructor and former Bathurst 1000 winner Luke Youlden.

With the EV fully charged up, Youlden was able to set a best time of 3:30.344. To put that into perspective, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS was driven around the same circuit back in 2018 in 3:24. On the same day as the Taycan Turbo S set its benchmark time, Youlden also drove a new 911 Turbo around the circuit in 3:22.066 to set a new production car lap record.

“To drive the Taycan is not too dissimilar to a petrol driven car: It’s unbelievably dynamic,” Youlden said. “Even though it (the Taycan) is a little bit heavier, the batteries are very, very low so the center of gravity is extremely low, which obviously makes the handling and the braking exceptionally good. To be that close to the old GT2 RS lap record around here? Unbelievable. It’s extremely fast. We did repeated 2.5 seconds 0-100 km/h runs in this car and that sort of feel off the corner was also where the Taycan makes up most of its lap time. It’s unbelievable.”
