We got a tour around Toyota’s bZ4X concept and we have to say, it looks near-production ready, both inside and out. Head down to see all the pictures we took of the study from the its static presentation. [Updated]

Toyota unveiled the bZ4X concept at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year and now it has arrived stateside as the electric crossover is celebrating its North American debut at a special event in Texas.

The concept previews an upcoming production model and is the first in a series of electric vehicles that will wear the “bZ” (Beyond Zero) moniker.

While Toyota is still keeping details under wraps, the bZ4X was jointly developed with Subaru and will be the Solterra’s counterpart. The model is roughly the same size as the RAV4 and rides on the new e-TNGA platform that was designed specifically for electric vehicles.

Given its electric powertrain, it’s not surprising to see an aerodynamic exterior with edgy styling and minimalist air intakes. The concept also features contrasting accents as well as chunky side skirts. Other notable highlights include a front fender charging port, a stylish shoulder line and an aerodynamic rear end with dual spoilers.

The futuristic styling continues in the cabin as there’s a digital instrument cluster with a half pipe-like surround. It’s joined by a beefy three-spoke steering wheel and a freestanding infotainment system with dedicated climate controls underneath. Elsewhere, we can see an upholstered dashboard, gloss black trim and a floating center console.

Back seats normally don’t get too much attention, but Toyota noted the long wheelbase will provide “ample interior space.” The floor is also flat and we can see controls for heated rear seats.

Range and performance specifications remain unkwnown, but Toyota North America’s group vice president of marketing Lisa Materazzo said the production model will be “positioned in the sweet spot of the market.” Materazzo didn’t elaborate, but that seems to suggest pricing will be competitive with the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4.

The production model will be launched in 2022 and Toyota has said we can expect more details later this year. Regardless, it promises to build on the company’s history of eco-friendly vehicles including the Prius and original RAV4 EV.

Toyota is doubling down on electrification as the company plans to have approximately 70 electrified models by 2025; 15 of them will be fully electric and seven will carry bZ branding. The Japanese automaker also reiterated they will “bring electrification to its pickup truck lineup in the near future” and that’s a reference to the 2022 Tundra, which was teased last month.
