General Motors is promising improved roadway coverage, faster music and video downloads, more reliable coverage, and faster navigation thanks to an upcoming switch to the 5G network.

The changeover is expected to happen with model year 2024 vehicles and GM is working with AT&T on the move to the fifth-generation cellular network. The switch will be crucial to making GM’s vision of the future that includes over-the-air updates and new technologies.

Ultimately, GM hopes to launch the world’s largest fleet of 5G-enabled vehicles. The automaker plans to have millions of vehicles on the road over the next decade capable of supporting the cellular network. Along with helping drivers and passengers download media faster, the 5G network will also help OnStar deliver better service.

“Together with AT&T, we’ve brought unprecedented experiences to the daily commute, family road trips, and everything in between,” said Santiago Chamorro, GM vice president of Global Connected Services. “This rollout demonstrates our commitment to growth through software-enabled services and reimagining every customer touchpoint by enabling faster connectivity speeds to power in-vehicle voice-enabled services, navigation, and apps that our customers have grown to love.”

AT&T’s network already covers 250 million people across the U.S. and the company invested more than $110 billion in its wireless and wireline networks between 2016 and 2020. Together with GM, the companies have been working at the automaker’s Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan to help test and develop 5G integration into vehicles.

“By connecting millions of GM vehicles to our nationwide 5G network, we will improve the customer experience for existing services while laying the groundwork for the next wave of innovation including autonomous driving,” said Gregory Wieboldt, senior vice president, Global Business, Industry Solutions, AT&T. “We now connect more vehicles than any other carrier and GM has played a critical role in our success.
