After showing the EQS and the EQE fully electric sedans, Mercedes-Benz is getting ready for the equivalent SUVs bearing the same names in 2022. This time, our spy photographers caught the EQE SUV, which looks almost identical to the alleged EQS SUV prototype that was spied a few months ago.

The heavy camouflage used in earlier sightings of EQE SUV prototypes from 2020 is gone, revealing more of the body and design details. The latest prototype also seems to be wearing the production headlights/taillights and a cool set of aerodynamic five-spoke wheels.

What puzzled us is the resemblance between the alleged EQE and EQS SUV prototypes. After close inspection, we noticed a few differences, although not enough to justify them as different models. The only one that stands out is that the EQE is featuring a different bonnet while the EQS had integrated fenders – similar to the Mercedes-Maybach EQS Concept.

Another cool detail we discovered under the camouflage thanks to the lighting and the angle of the photographs, is the new wave-shaped character lines above the flush door handles. Overall, the electric SUV has an aerodynamic silhouette with rounded surfaces and large-diameter wheels. The front end is dominated by the huge but completely covered grille which – like in every model of the EQ range – is visually connected with the headlights.

Mercedes is known for the Russian doll-styling of its range and the EQE/EQS sedans bear a close resemblance but if these are two different SUVs, then they took it to another level. There is also the chance that we are talking about slightly different prototypes of the same model since it is common for the designers/engineers to make changes during development and before the final production car is finalized.

In any case, the high-riding models will ride on different versions of the same platform and likely share powertrain options with the homonymous sedans. This means they will inherit 90.6 kWh or 107.8 kWh batteries, combined with single or dual electric motors. The electric range will be slightly worse compared to the more aerodynamic sedans, but more than enough to compete with rival electric SUVs from other automakers.

We will have more information about both the EQE SUV and the EQS SUV as we inch closer to their debut in 2022. In terms of rivals, the Mercedes-Benz EQE will compete with the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron and BMW iX5, while the EQS will aim higher at the Audi e-tron and BMW iX flagships.
