The Senna name goes hand in hand with Formula 1, with many considering three-time world champion Ayrton Senna to be among the greatest drivers of all time. Thirty one years ago, Ayrton won his last race in the U.S. driving for McLaren at the 1991 Phoenix Grand Prix. Seeing as the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, the latest race to take place in the U.S., will go down this weekend, McLaren decided they’d commemorate the event by having Bruno Senna, former F1 driver and nephew of Ayrton, take their new Artura supercar for some laps of the all-new circuit.

In addition to the introduction of a second American race on the F1 calendar (soon to be three with the addition of next year’s Las Vegas GP), the stunt is also celebrating the North American debut of the Artura. The car was originally scheduled to be released earlier, but chip shortages led to its launch being pushed back.

Now the Artura is finally here, and we get to watch Senna harness all 671 hp (680 PS / 500 kW) of its V6 hybrid power as he makes his way around the 3.36-mile (5.41 km) circuit, which features 19 corners, three DRS zones, and some very interesting geography. Some of that includes a section that runs underneath a highway as well as parts that border Hard Rock Stadium.

“It was truly amazing to be able to push the McLaren Artura around this dynamic and free-flowing new Grand Prix circuit in the heart of Miami,” said Senna. “The Artura is a car that keeps on giving, especially on a track; it’s smooth and refined but with an aggressive edge that is just waiting to be discovered as you utilize the E-motor combined with the powerful V6 engine. It’s predictable and fun – the perfect ride for a Grand Prix weekend.”

There’s been some criticism surrounding the fact that this race is technically held in a parking lot. However, the more information we get on it, the more it shapes up to be a seemingly good track. Nevertheless, aside from any runs done in the simulator, this circuit will be completely new for all the drivers racing this weekend, so it should pan out to be quite the show.
