Prodrive took to its social media channels today to tease a new vehicle called the “P25.” An homage to one of its most legendary vehicles, the new car appears to be a restomod version of a first-generation two-door WRX and it will be revealed on May 25, 2022.

The legendary U.K. race team offers few hints about what’s coming apart from a quick sketch and the promise that the P25 will be “an icon redefined.” That may suggest that, like Cyan Racing, Prodrive will make a modernized and modified version of the first-generation Subaru Impreza WRX for well-heeled, nostalgic customers.

The race team is deeply connected to the brand, having developed, built, and run race cars for the Subaru World Rally Team from 1990 until 2008. In that time, it won three driver’s championships and three manufacturers’ titles with legendary drivers like Colin McRae and Richard Burns – both of whom have had popular rallying video games named after them.

However, in 1997, 25 years ago, World Rally Car regulations replaced Group A regulations, heralding a new era of rally racing. Although Colin McRae lost the driver’s title by a single point, the Prodrive-produced Subaru Impreza WRC ended up winning the hotly contested constructors’ title.

The name, however, carries further significance. In 2000, Prodrive released the Impreza P1, a highly modified, roadgoing version of the Impreza coupe. It featured Prodrive suspension, an engine modified to make 280 hp (209 kW/284 PS), and a special front spoiler extension designed by Peter Stevens, who helped design the McLaren F1.

Just how this new P25 will compare to that car remains to be seen, but the big wing and the hood scoop that can be seen in the sketch released today suggest that this will be a big hit for Subaru fans and rally aficionados alike.
