It’s nearly time for Volkswagen to show off the latest generation of its pickup truck, the Amarok. To get us excited, it’s teasing us with a new short video highlighting the new vehicle’s premium but still functional interior.

Pleasingly, the new 2023 Volkswagen Amarok will still have physical buttons despite the current vogue for touchscreens. Due, it says, to the rugged functional nature of pickup trucks, the buttons and switches are easier to operate speedily.

The textured surface of the volume nob and hazard light switch are particularly highlighted in the video that begins with shots of metallic, crystalline structures that eventually evolve into the “aluminum-look” controls.

It won’t all be buttons and switches, though. Volkswagen says that the truck’s various driver assist systems and infotainment features will be operated with a mix of physical and digital controls.

Indeed, the buttons and nobs will sit under a massive, tablet-style touchscreen derived from the Ford Ranger, with which the Amarok will share a chassis. The screen will be 10- or 12-inches across and will offer connectivity features that VW claims you would expect from a premium car. It will also handle climate control features, navigation, online services, vehicle settings, and more.

Set to be unveiled digitally on July 7, the Amarok will be offered in five trim levels with the entry level Amarok being joined by the mid-range Life and Style trims, the off-road focused PanAmericana trim, and the on-road optimized Aventura. Volkswagen will offer one gas engine and four diesel engines, all ranging from between 2.0-liters to 3.0-liter. The largest will enable the Amarok to tow up to 7,716 lbs (3.5 tonnes) and haul 2,645 lbs (1.2 tonnes).

Production of the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok is set to begin before the end of this year in South Africa.
