The veil has just been lifted on a new plug-in hybrid version of the Toyota Harrier sold in Japan, while a handful of other updates have also been made to the broader Harrier family.

Providing the Harrier PHEV with power is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which on its own is good for 130 kW (174 hp) and 219 Nm (161 lb-ft) of torque. Supplementing this engine is an electric motor at the front axle with 134 kW (180 hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) in addition to a rear-mounted electric motor with 40 kW (54 hp) and 121 Nm (89 lb-ft) of torque. This results in a combined 302 hp (225 kW).

Toyota says the plug-in hybrid can travel 93 km (58 miles) on electric power alone and notes that it has an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Few visual changes have been made to distinguish the plug-in hybrid model from others in the Harrier range. With that being said, there is a bespoke front grille and customers can order it in one of four colors, including an exclusive shade of gray metallic. The interior stands out thanks to dark red piping and a metal mesh material used across the instrument panel and door trim. Key standard features of the new Harrier variant include heated rear seats and a panoramic view monitor.

As for the broader Harrier range, Toyota has equipped all models with the Toyota Safety Sense package, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, in-vehicle WiFi, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Full pricing details haven’t been confirmed but, according to local media, will vary between 3,128,000 yen and 6,200,000 yen ($21,620-42,850). The updated petrol and hybrid models will be available from October 4 while the new plug-in hybrid will join the range on October 31.
