Volkswagen announced its lineup for SEMA 2022 in Las Vegas, including two adventurous “Basecamp” concepts based on the Atlas and the Taos SUVs, a trio of ID.4s, a special Golf GTI filled with Oettinger accessories, a one-off Jetta GLI Performance, a unique Golf A59 prototype designed for the WRC, and the new Golf R that will be exhibited alongside its R32 predecessor.
Starting with the Atlas and the Taos, this is not the first time we see “Basecamp” concepts of those models as VW presented something similar in the 2019 edition of SEMA.

The new Basecamp Camping study is based on a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas SEL VR6 3.6L 4Motion unlike its pre-facelifted predecessor. It features raised suspension with H&R springs, Street Performance Adventure Lift coilovers, and TRAK+ wheel spacers, combined with a new set of 16-inch fifteen52 Traverse MX wheels shod in A/T tires (245/70R17). The camping-focused kit includes a roof-mounted basket and side awning by Thule, an Air Pump by NSV in the boot so you can inflate the double air mattress, some extra lights, Muddybuddy floor liners, a tablet holder, and a fire extinguisher.
The Basecamp Active concept builds on the 2022 VW Taos SEL 4Motion and looks pretty similar to the 2019 Taos Basecamp. It rides on the same 17-inch wheels with the Atlas-based concept with the lifted H&R suspension and plenty of VW Accessories. The highlights are the roof-mounted bike rack, the cargo divider carrying Marin bicycles, and the new Basecamp livery.
EVs Get Some Love Too
Moving on, there is a trio of EVs, all based on the VW ID.4. The most colorful one is the rally-prepped ID.4 that took part in the Rebelle Rally, joined by the ID.4 Accessories Concept and the ID.4 EV Drone Command Concept that was recently announced as a “Mobile Drone Response Vehicle” for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Interestingly, Volkswagen didn’t include the European off-road-prepped ID.4Xtreme concept in the SEMA lineup, although it would be perfect for the role.
The VW ID.4 Accessories concept showcases the optional components that can be retrofitted to the EV like the Thule Canyon Basket, and the Apex XT 9025XT hitch-mounted bike rack. It is also fitted with 245/60R18 all-terrain tires, spacers, and splash guards for those who intend to use the EV off the beaten track. Inside there is a Full Display Mirror, a special rear seat cover, durable floor mats by Monster Mats, a spare tire kit, plus a roadside assistance / first aid kit.
VW Golf GTI Enhanced By Oettinger
It was February 2022 when VW announced a series of Oettinger accessories for the Golf GTI and R, and now it brings a full-spec example to SEMA. This 2022 VW Golf GTI SE with the traditional six-speed manual gearbox is distinguished by the add-ons on the bumpers and rear spoiler, the 20-inch alloy wheels, the paint-to-sample roof box, and the Bumperillo rear bumper protection. It sits closer to the ground thanks to the H&R Street Performance coilovers. Stopping power is also upgraded with 14.6-inch ventilated cross-drilled discs and eight-piston calipers at the front. Inside VW added floor mats by Monster Mats and a heavy-duty trunk liner with CarGo blocks, showing that this Golf is for those who plan on carrying a lot of stuff.
The company also announced a Jetta GLI Performance Concept created by the VW Design Center in California but didn’t include any photos or information so we expect to learn more about it tomorrow.
The VW stand will also host two interesting vehicles from the past. The 2004 VW Golf R32 hot hatch will be showcased alongside the modern 2022 VW Golf R celebrating 20 years of the R brand. Finally, the 1993 VW Rallye Golf 3 A59 Prototype developed by Schmidt Motorsport (SMS) is a forgotten feasibility study for the WRC that could lead to a homologation special hot hatch, but never reached production.
