Volkswagen says it is ahead of schedule with its all-electric ID. models, as it reached the milestone of 500,000 deliveries around the world. VW says it’s proud to have achieved this despite tight supply lines and production difficulties related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Delivery of half a million ID.s confirms that the Volkswagen models are being well-received by our customers—all over the world. We are on the right track with our electric mobility campaign and our success story continues,” Imelda Labbé, head of sales at Volkswagen, said. “Our focus is unchanged—we want to make Volkswagen the most desirable brand for sustainable mobility.”

Better still, the order books remain full at Volkswagen. The automaker says it is currently working to complete another 135,000 ID. vehicles. As intimated above, though, difficulties in the supply chain mean that production must constantly be adjusted.

Beyond being electric, the MEB platform has also introduced a number of technological updates to the Volkswagen lineup. Things like over-the-air updates ensure that the vehicles are constantly improvable and fixable as time goes by.

“Our experience with this in recent months has been very positive,” said Labbé. “The benefit is that we can transform customer feedback directly and swiftly into new functions, such as increased charging capacity or a battery capacity notification, in the driver display.”

All the while, Volkswagen is working hard to keep its lineup fresh and is on track to unveil 10 new models by 2026.

“Volkswagen will have the broadest portfolio of electric vehicles in the automotive industry: From the entry-level e-car with a target price of under €25,000 ($25,795 USD at current exchange rates) to the new flagship Aero B we will have the right offer in every segment,” said Labbé.

By 2030, meanwhile, all-electric vehicles will account for 70 percent of VW’s sales in Europe, and in the U.S. and China, it hopes for all-electric vehicles to make up 50 percent of all sales. By 2033, all of its vehicles will be electric in Europe.
