BMW is a brand synonymous with automotive enthusiasts. It has a long history of building exceptional driving machines. It also has a bit of a reputation for building some cars that are overly difficult to maintain or unreliable. With all of this in mind, what’s the best used BMW on the market for $50,000 or less?

It seems to us that there are two very clear paths here. The first is probably the safest path. Buying a certified pre-owned BMW. Not only will it still have a one-year unlimited-mileage warranty but it’ll have all of the benefits that come along with a more modern vehicle.

Under our budget, we’ve found a number of desirable models. A 2015 M4 isn’t hard to find and features an inline six-cylinder engine with 425 hp (316 kW). In addition, there are 2018 M2s out there. Those come with 365 hp ( kW) and sit atop a more nimble platform than you’ll get with the M4.

It doesn’t stop there though. There are M3s, Z4s, 7-Series sedans, and X-Series SUVs available too. Keep in mind that if not all, most of the models we’ve mentioned here could be eligible for even longer (optional) warranty coverage through the dealer. Still, with $50k burning a hole in your pocket, it might be a bit too hard to resist getting something that’s already a classic or likely on its way to becoming one.

Depending on your comfort level with high mileage and aftermarket modifications, you can find many E36 and E46 M3s within your budget. However, as with any modern-day BMW, they each come with their own set of reliability and often expensive maintenance issues, especially if you’re not comfortable getting your hands dirty. The E90 M3 with its burly V8 can also be had. You could look for something rarer like a classic 8-Series too.

If it was my cash, I’d have an E60 M5 in a heartbeat. These things are regularly going for under $30k right now. I’d take the extra cash and do what needs to be done to (hopefully) make it bulletproof. Then, I’d enjoy the song of its V10 pumping out 507 hp (378 kW) everywhere I went. It wouldn’t shock me if it appreciated in value over time too.
