Tesla drivers who find themselves around red lights and speed cameras are about to get a helping hand. A notable Tesla hacker just found code in an upcoming software update that will alert drivers to both.

X user GreenTheOnly has been releasing app data and software insights about Tesla for years. Now, they’ve come across a new update dubbed 2023.27.12 (beta 11.4.8.1) that adds awareness for both speed and red light cameras. Notably, this awareness isn’t dedicated only to fixed cameras, he says. That sounds as though users will have the freedom to report police speed traps as they move from one place to the next.

In addition, the update enables a new “driver liveliness” assessment. While we can’t confirm a direct connection, Tesla did recently reveal that it would use an in-cabin camera to capture “driver inattentiveness while Autopilot is engaged.” This new driver liveliness assessment could very well be an addition or branch of that same feature.

Green also noticed that a couple of other features are coming to the system in the future. First, drivers will have the ability to tell their navigation system to avoid construction on route. Secondly, it appears that they’ll have the ability to decide how they want the nav system to indicate U-turns. Both features would only add to an already rich system.

Notably, many other apps like Google Maps, Waze, and Highway Radar already provide users with information about red light cameras, speed cameras, and speed traps. Seeing as Tesla doesn’t allow for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration these updates are a welcome surprise.
