• The 2027 BMW X5 M will debut with a refreshed design inspired by the Neue Klasse.
  • Expect a twin-turbo V8 engine with hybrid assistance to power the performance SUV.

A fresh design shift is coming to BMW’s entire lineup, bringing a unified, modern aesthetic to both electric and combustion-powered models. Named the Neue Klasse design language, this styling overhaul will debut with the second-generation iX3, followed by the all-electric i3, BMW’s fresh take on a battery-powered 3-Series.

Recent spy shots have also revealed the next-generation 2026 X5 and its iX5 electric twin, sporting a significantly updated look ahead of its expected debut.

A New Look for BMW’s Muscle SUV

To provide us with an idea of what the new X5 will look like, artist Nikita Chuiko from Kolesahas released a set of detailed renderings. These aren’t just of any X5 either, but the next-generation of the high-performance M variant, which will also adopt BMW’s new design direction.

As far as high-performance super SUVs go, the current X5 M looks pretty good. Yes, it has a pair of oversized kidney grilles, but at least they’re not as gargantuan as those on the M3 and M4. However, the new X5 M will look radically different. But will it look better?

If these renderings prove accurate, it will carry a more athletically styled presence than the current version. Even so, we suspect some will prefer the more brutish look of the current model.

Much like the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, which previewed the new iX3, the updated X5 will rock a pair of new headlights that are incorporated neatly behind gloss black panels, which extend to a pair of quite small, upright kidney grilles. It looks sporty and purposeful, while also ensuring the new model retains one of BMW’s most important design traits.

Powerful Looks For A Powerful SUV

Elsewhere, the SUV has been showcased with a dramatic new bumper with gaping-wide black air intakes and air curtains on the sides. The door panels have undergone changes, and the creases running along them appear less jarring than those of the current X5 M. Prototypes have also shown that traditional door handles will be replaced with small touch panels on the window frames.

The rear looks very compelling as well. Gone are the thick taillights of the current model, and in their place are a pair of slimmer units. The, now customary, black diffuser has been retained, as have the quad tailpipes.

If the standard X7 receives its expected update for the 2027 model year and makes its debut sometime in 2026, the next X5 M likely won’t break cover until the first half of 2027 at the earliest. As for what’s under the hood of the G95-coded M variant, it’s anticipated to use the S68 4.4-liter V8 paired with an electric motor that’s already utilized by the latest XM and M5 and, in the X5 M, should deliver upwards of 700 hp.
