• Toyota may launch a rugged minivan based on the X-Van Gear Concept in 2026.
  • It could share its platform with the Noah and Voxy while adopting SUV design cues.
  • Powertrain options may include a 2.0L gas engine or 1.8L hybrid with optional AWD.

As everyone waits for Toyota’s compact-sized Land Cruiser to show up, a new rumor out of Japan suggests the company might be cooking up something a little less expected, but equally interesting. Instead of another SUV or truck, this one’s a minivan with a crossover attitude. The model in question is likely the production version of the Toyota X-Van Gear Concept that first surfaced in 2023.

The last real update on the concept came in March 2024, when a batch of patent drawings made the rounds online. Toyota hasn’t said a word about a production launch, but Japanese outlet Motor Fan has brought the rumors back to life, citing unnamed insiders. According to their report, the minivan could make its debut sometime between October 2025 and spring 2026.

A More Adventurous Kind of Minivan

If it does reach production, the X-Van Gear would offer a more rugged alternative to the mechanically related Noah and Voxy models. While built on the same platform, the concept stands out with its boxier shape, heavy plastic body cladding, and outdoorsy personality. Its dimensions match those of the Noah and Voxy, measuring 4,695 mm (184.8 inches) in length with a 2,850 mm (112.2 inches) wheelbase.

Rumors suggest the production version will closely follow the concept’s design, including its signature dual sliding doors. The possible absence of B-pillars could make for easier access and a more flexible interior space, especially useful for camping or family outings.

Inside, the minivan could keep its three-row layout but introduce new ways to reconfigure the cabin depending on how it’s used. Think sleeping area one night, dining nook the next. The futuristic dashboard seen in the concept would likely be scaled back for production, replaced with a more practical digital display and smart storage touches.

2023 Toyota X-Van Gear Concept

The production version of the X-Van Gear is expected share its underpinnings with the Noah and Voxy that were introduced in 2022. These models ride on a stretched version of the TNGA-C architecture and are powered by either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine or a 1.8-liter hybrid. Both powertrain options are available with 4WD.

Launch Window and Price Expectations

Based on the reported timeline, the model could debut at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show in October or possibly the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon in January. As for pricing, the Japanese report suggests a starting point slightly higher than the Noah, at around ¥3.5 million (roughly $23,500).

Of course, all of this remains unconfirmed. Japanese automotive media has a reputation for ambitious speculation, and local outlet Creative Trend noted that a Toyota dealer they contacted had no knowledge of a new minivan scheduled for 2025.

Still, if this crossover-style van does make it to production, it would land in the same niche as the Mitsubishi Delica D:5, a long-standing favorite among Japan’s adventure van crowd. That model is also rumored to be getting a new generation, possibly influenced by the Delica D:X plug-in hybrid concept. As for Toyota’s version, its export prospects appear limited, at least for now.
