  • Driver admitted hitting nearly 190 km/h in his Toyota 86 coupe.

Police in Australia take speeding very seriously, and after they nabbed a 17-year-old driving at almost double the speed limit along a Queensland highway, they used it to teach the young driver just how reckless his antics were. That included telling him they’d either be calling or personally visiting his mother to explain the severity of the offense.

Officers in Mountain Creek spotted the teenage driver of a white Toyota 86 traveling at 189 km/h (117 mph) in a 100 km/h (62 mph) zone at approximately 12:13 a.m. on January 31. Unlike some drivers who may have feigned ignorance when asked by police how quickly they were going, this one openly admitted he thought he’d hit 190 km/h.

What Do You Tell a Teen Doing 190?

“You’re 17, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you,” one of the police officers told him during the stop. “You’re 89 km/h over the speed limit, and you’ve had your license for what…two months? I think, to be honest, you need to go home and have a long look at yourself.”

“I’d probably wake your mom up when you get home and sit down and talk to her about what happened tonight,” one of the officers added. “She’s going to get a call or a visit from us, and we’ll talk to her.”

A Price for Every Offense

For his high-speed thrill ride, the young driver was issued a hefty AU$1,854 ($1,300) infringement fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h (25 mph) and also received an automatic 6-month license suspension and eight demerit points on his license.

On top of that, he was fined AU$322 ($224) for driving a defective vehicle and AU$267 ($186) for failing to display P-plates, which are required since he only held a provisional license.

“I’ll bet my last dollar that your mom will sit in bed and cry when you tell her how quick you were going tonight, I’ll bet on it,” one of the officers added.

In a statement, local authorities said they “would like to remind road users that factors such as speeding have a direct consequence on your safety and those around you. The incident serves as a reminder that safer roads start with you. Every decision you make behind the wheel, matters.”
