• The car heading to auction has covered just 1,997 km since new in August 2006.
  • A near-€10,000 service was completed recently ahead of the RM Sotheby’s listing.
  • Its 5.4-liter supercharged V8 makes 582 hp, bettering today’s BMW M4 Competition.

Has AMG gone soft? As the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz has expanded its model lineup in pursuit of higher sales and profits, many would argue it has lost some of the manic streak it had in its more formative years.

Of all the bonkers cars built by AMG, including the legendary SL65 AMG Black Series, the CLK DTM Cabriolet stands out as one of its most dramatic. Built between 2006 and 2007, just 80 examples hit the road, following on from the 100 Coupes that were built to celebrate Mercedes-Benz winning the 2003 DTM championship.

Given how few CLK DTM Cabriolets were built, it’s very rare that one comes up for sale. However, RM Sotheby’s is selling one at its Lake Tagernsee auction in Germany in July, and it may sell for as much as $650,000.

This car was delivered in August of 2006 and is painted in Bright Silver Metallic with a black anthracite interior. It recently underwent a near-€10,000 ($11,800) service in preparation for this sale and has a mere 1,997 km (1,240 miles) on the odometer. This likely makes it one of the lowest-mileage CLK DTMs on the planet.

Driving the AMG is a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with 582 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque, impressive figures when you consider a similarly sized BMW M4 Competition today is rated at 523 hp and 479 lb-ft (649 Nm). The AMG sends power exclusively through the rear wheels and will accelerate to 186 mph (300 km/h).

The convertible’s design is arguably as flamboyant as AMG has ever gone, sporting flared front and rear wheel arches and a fixed rear wing. The cabin is also something rather special, sporting lightweight bucket seats at the front and rear seats set directly into the carbon fiber bulkhead.

While there’s some hope that AMG is getting its mojo back by ditching the controversial four-cylinder hybrid C 63 and potentially returning to a V8, we’re doubtful it’ll ever return to the heights of the CLK DTM. Go check out the listing over here and see what half a million dollars of unapologetic madness looks like.
