• Model Y stormed from January slump to March champion.
  • Renault Clio kept steadier pace and won quarter overall.
  • Fresh SUVs from rivals are making Europe crowded fast.

Go back to January and Tesla’s Model Y couldn’t even break into the list of top 40 best selling cars. Then March arrived, quarter-end delivery season kicked in, and suddenly the Y was hooking buyers like it was living 2023 all over again.

After sitting 42nd in January and 14th in February, Tesla’s crossover surged to first place in March, according to Data Force figures reported by Auto News. Registrations jumped 117 percent from March 2025’s to 33,723 units, a huge leap that pushed it ahead of everything else on the continent.

That also made it the Model Y’s first monthly victory since December, suggesting the EV may finally be finding its feet again with the addition of three-row option and more affordable entry-level trim. Whatever the reason, it’s a return to form for a car that three years ago was Europe’s best selling car of any powertrain type, but subsequently lost its form, and even an early 2025 facelift couldn’t bring it back.

Behind the Tesla in March’s league table came the Nissan Qashqai with 27,832 sales, followed by the Renault Clio on 24,294. The humble Dacia Sandero, which once battled the Y for top spot, and Volkswagen Golf, completed the top five.

Model 3 Shares Success

March brought more good news for Tesla in the shape of improved Model 3s sales. It clawed its way to 11th with 18,880 registrations (up 55 percent) after barely troubling the leaderboard earlier in the year. For a brand that looked wobbly in January, it was a useful reminder that it’s far too early to be writing Tesla’s obituary.

But zoom out beyond March to the full quarter, and the story changes. The Clio topped Q1 with 55,763 sales, beating the Model Y’s 51,468. The Golf followed closely behind, while the Qashqai and Volkswagen T-Roc rounded out the top five. Tesla’s March sprint helped enormously, but Renault’s consistency across all three months won the trophy.

That steadier performance matters because Europe’s market is getting busier. Newer models posted some of the biggest gains. The Skoda Elroq continued its strong rise, while the Citroen C3 Aircross, increasingly popular Jaecoo 7, Fiat Grande Panda, and Dacia Bigster all gained ground.
