• Mazda3’s future is uncertain, but independent illustrations showing the way.
  • A heavy redesign of the current model could offeer ICE and hybrid options.
  • Another possibility is a fully electric Mazda3e based on Chinese bones.

Update: This story has been overhauled to reflect the latest information on Mazda’s future product strategy, along with fresh illustrations of a next-gen Mazda3 created by digital artist Theottle.

The Mazda3 has been a staple of the Japanese brand’s lineup for decades, but as the current generation enters its seventh year on the market, it is starting to show its age. While the automaker hasn’t given any official word on what’s next for its compact model, independent digital artists have imagined a heavy refresh that could arrive in 2027 or 2028.

Over the latest years, Mazda has been largely focused on beefing up its SUV lineup. In certain parts of the world, the company has also introduced a fully electric sedan and SUV duo developed in collaboration with Chinese automaker Changan. Still, following the retirement of the Mazda6, the Mazda3 is the sole ICE-powered sedan offering in its global lineup.

The fourth-generation Mazda3 debuted in late 2018 before entering production and dealerships in 2019. Available in both five-door hatchback and four-door sedan versions, it was immediately praised for its handsome yet aggressive styling. But, like your favorite band that releases a killer album and then disappears for years, the Mazda3 has been conspicuously absent from any significant updates since. Now, it’s clear that an update is long overdue.

Instead of a simple facelift, independent digital artist Theophilus Chin has created renderings of a new generation of the compact sedan. The design incorporates styling cues from the new Mazda CX-5, giving it an upscale appearance.

The front end adopts sharp LEDs that wrap around a slim grille, paired with a sculpted bumper. The profile has Mazda surfacing but the proportions are actually based on the Alfa Romeo Giulia. This explains the RWD stance, deviating from the FWD nature of the current Mazda3.

The rear end is quite appealing, featuring horizontally-arrange sleepy-style LED taillights and a clean bumper with dual tailpipes.

Other Takes

Theottle’s renderings are not the first to imagine a new Mazda3. Digimods Design has also created a heavy facelift of the sedan. His take also used the front end of the new CX-5 as an inspiration, albeit with different bumper intakes.

The profile combines a carry-over greenhouse with reworked surfacing on the doors and fenders. The rear end has also been revamped with slim taillights borrowed from Mazda’s SUV lineup. he result is a more modern silhouette, but one that still feels familiar.

Another independent digital artist, MV Auto, has created renderings of a facelifted Mazda3 hatchback, drawing styling cues from the electrified Mazda 6e / EZ-6 sedan. This interpretation of a future model blends a familiar silhouette with redesigned front and rear ends.

Finally, our own Josh Byrnes designed a fully electric Mazda EZ-3 sedan. The zero-emission model is actually a reskinned version of the Deepal L06, proposing a continuation of Mazda’s collaboration with Changan.

Naturally, the proportions and greenhouse are identical to the Deepal. However, the bodywork gains Mazda’s signature sculpted surfacing, and the front end follows the recipe of the larger Mazda 6e / EZ-6 sedan.

Are We Really Expecting A New Mazda3?

Good question. While the Japanese automaker is keeping its cards closed about its future plans for the Mazda3, we sincerely hope that a new version will arrive sooner rather than later. After all, it is the only combustion sedan in the current Mazda lineup and one of the few non-crossover models next to the MX-5 roadster.

Mazda is shifting toward a “Multi-Solution” strategy for the immediate future with confirmed plans for ICE, hybrid, and fully electric models.

The new SkyActiv-Z engine is expected to arrive in 2027 bringing “unprecedented efficiency”. On the same year, Mazda will introduce an in-house developed self-charging hybrid setup that could finally limit their reliance to the current Toyota-sourced system. Furthermore, the first Mazda EV to ride on the company’s own EV-dedicated architecture will reportedly arrive in 2029.

Two Possible Scenarios For The Next 3

Mazda

Mazda could introduce a new Mazda3 based on the front-wheel-drive platform of the existing model, as the rear-wheel-drive setup is better suited for larger models. This significantly updated version could be offered with the SkyActiv-Z four-cylinder engine and the new self-charging hybrid powertrain, helping it compete more effectively with rivals like the next Toyota Corolla and the upcoming Honda Civic.

Last year, the automaker secured the Mazda3e naming rights in several key global markets including Australia, Europe, and the UK. These patent filings hint that a smaller sibling to the Mazda6e might be under development. A new compact sedan could be based on the Chinese Deepal L06 which is available with fully electric and range-extender powertrains.

There is also a chance that an electric/range-extender Mazda3e could co-exist with an unrelated e ICE-powered/hybrid Mazda3, each focused on different markets. However, this would require a heavy investment in R&D, and it is not clear if the sales volumes in the compact sedan segment would be enough to justify a potential overlap.

We’ll probably learn more about Mazda’s plans for the compact hatch and sedan over the next two years. Until then, we’ll rely on our spy photographers, hoping they catch a glimpse of camouflaged prototypes to confirm that the Mazda3 is, in fact, still alive and kicking.
