• Ford Ranger was Australia’s top seller for a third straight year.
  • Toyota’s new RAV4 and Hilux aim to challenge Ranger’s lead.
  • Isuzu D-Max, Ford Everest, and Toyota Prado also performed well.

Rewind fifteen years, and Australia’s list of best-selling new cars looked very different. Sedans like the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, Toyota Corolla, and Toyota Camry were household fixtures at the top of the sales charts. Today, that picture has changed entirely. The sedans that once ruled the road have all but disappeared, overtaken by a wave of pickups and SUVs that now dominate the top 10.

Last year, the Ford Ranger was Australia’s most popular new vehicle for the third consecutive year, with 56,555 units sold. As reported by Drive, this places the Ranger in rare company, marking the first time in 37 years that a Ford has topped the annual sales charts three years in a row. It now surpasses the iconic Falcon’s 21st-century total and joins it as one of the only Ford nameplates ever to lead the national market for three or more years.

Not far behind were two stalwarts from Toyota. The RAV4 posted 51,947 sales, while the Hilux followed closely with 51,297. Both numbers are solid, though each marks a dip from the year before, down 11.5 percent and 4.1 percent respectively. Toyota will be eyeing a comeback with the next-generation RAV4 and Hilux due soon, hoping to claw back ground from the Ford.

The nation’s fourth best-seller was the Isuzu D-Max, another pickup, shifting 26,839 units, down 11.1 percent from 2024. Other popular models include the Ford Everest (26,161), the Toyota Prado (26,106), Hyundai Kona (22,769), Mazda CX-5 (22,742), Mitsubishi Outlander (22,459), and the Tesla Model Y, with 22,239 sold.

While many of Australia’s most popular new vehicles experienced a drop in sales last year, total new vehicle sales reached a record 1.241 million, 0.3 percent higher than the previous year. This uptick was largely driven by a surge of new models arriving from China, many of them electric.

The EV Climb Continues

EV sales in particular continued their upward trajectory. Australians bought 103,270 electric vehicles in 2025, up 13.1 percent from the year before.

Review: BYD Sealion 6 Makes Plug-In Hybrids Feel Seamless, But Fun Is Optional

No brand grew faster than BYD. It sold 52,415 vehicles last year, up a staggering 156.2 percent, putting it just behind fellow Chinese brand GWM, which moved 52,809 units. That leaves BYD within striking distance of becoming the country’s top-selling Chinese marque. Things weren’t as rosy for MG, which saw its sales fall 18.4 percent to 41,298 units.

Demand for hybrid and plug-in hybrid models has also jumped considerably. Sales of traditional hybrid vehicles rose 15.3 percent to 199,133 units, while plug-in hybrids saw a sharp increase of 130.9 percent, reaching 53,484 units sold.
