• The Brabus upgrades of this SL63 originally cost over $200,000.
  • The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 has been upgraded to deliver 740 hp.
  • Just 25 examples of the Bobo Buschmann edition were built.

Brabus builds some extraordinary cars, but that does not automatically make them sound investments. A striking example is a rare 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63 tuned by Brabus that has shed nearly half its value in only a few years and recently failed to sell at auction in the United States.

The SL63 in question is known as the Brabus 750 Bobo Buschmann Edition, launched in mid-2023 to celebrate the company’s founder. Production was capped at just 25 units, and this one cost the original owner an eye-watering $415,000. That’s almost double the price of a standard SL63 and largely mirrors just how much value the car has lost.

After appearing on Bring a Trailer earlier this month, bidding climbed to $241,000 but failed to meet the reserve price. This comes despite the odometer showing only 1,700 miles (2,735 km).

For starters, the German tuner has added several carbon fiber parts, including the front splitter and rear diffuser. There’s also an illuminated badge on the front grille, eye-catching three-spoke 21-inch and 22-inch forged wheels, and carbon ceramic brakes.

The interior was also extensively revised, adding black Nappa leather with quilted stitching at a cost of $59,000. Carbon fiber trim appears throughout the cabin, and illuminated sill plates add another visual flourish. It certainly looks like a pleasant place to spend time, although the price of those interior upgrades alone rivals a new Corvette Stingray.

The engine also received substantial attention. Among the upgrades are new Brabus turbochargers and a revised tune, allowing the 4.0-liter V8 to produce 740 hp and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque.

Exclusive tuner cars often command hefty premiums when new, but the resale market tends to be far less forgiving. This SL63’s stalled auction suggests rarity alone does not always guarantee lasting value. For second-hand buyers, though, that same depreciation could turn a heavily upgraded roadster like this into a rather tempting deal.
