• Someone is betting that they’ll be able to repair this 2018 911 GT2 RS.
  • The car has only 25 miles on the odometer since leaving the factory.
  • Comparable 911 GT2 RSs that are often traded go for around $600,000.

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is an absolute monster, and when equipped with the Manthey kit, it remains the fastest road car from Porsche to ever lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife, which is no small feat for a car that went on sale all the way back in 2018. Like other track-focused 911 models, values have been climbing in recent years, but not even that can explain what has just happened at a Texas auction.

Earlier this week, a 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS with what many would describe as delivery mileage was listed for auction by Apple Towing on HiBid. By the time the gavel fell, the car had changed hands for $710,000, putting it near the top of every public-auction result the model has ever produced. That number alone would be worth a paragraph. The complication makes it worth a whole article.

According to the listing, the car requires a battery boost to start and does not shift into gear. In plain English, it does not move under its own power. There’s no explanation for why this is the case, nor any mention of the GT2 having been previously involved in an accident that may have damaged the transmission. Either the winning bidder didn’t read the description, or they read it and assumed the fault would be cheap to fix. Neither possibility inspires confidence.

A Collector’s Dream?

A look at recent auction results of similar 2018 911 GT2 RS models on Bring a Trailer shows that, depending on mileage, they are typically selling for between $500,000 and $700,000 in the United States. Like most others, this car is equipped with the optional Weissach package, adding to its value.

The decisive factor is almost certainly the odometer. It reads 25 miles (40 km), which puts the car among the lowest-mileage GT2 RS examples anywhere on the planet. For collectors chasing untouched survivors, that figure rewrites the math.

The winning bidder is no doubt very confident that the values of these cars will continue to rise, and they probably will, as this generation of GT2 RS still represents the pinnacle of Porsche 911 performance. That said, a new GT2 RS is reportedly in the works and is expected to be even quicker.
