• VW has previewed the upcoming Tukan pickup in Brazil.
  • The MQB-based model has a rigid rear axle and leaf springs.
  • It will be offered with a mild-hybrid turbo 1.5-liter engine.

Volkswagen has rolled out a prototype of the Tukan, the compact unibody pickup it is building for Brazil and other South American markets. The colorful camouflage, layered with VW roundels, the Brazilian flag, a soccer ball, and other patriotic flourishes, hides the details but reveals the proportions. The short hood, dual-cab layout, and stubby rear give it the silhouette of an SUV that wandered into a workshop and walked out with a bed.

Up front, sharp LED headlights pair with a honeycomb-patterned bumper intake that borrows from the European T-Roc. The boxy wheel arches, sculpted fenders, generous ground clearance, and roof rails flowing back into the sports bar round out the look.

The exposed tailgate features Tukan lettering, inspired by the Toukan bird. It also shows the Canary Yellow launch color, consistent with the original teaser from February 2026.

Unibody Underpinnings With A Twist

The Tukan rides on a modified version of the MQB architecture, sharing components with the T-Cross. However, the pickup has a custom rear suspension setup comprising a rigid axle and semi-elliptical leaf springs. This represents a departure from the torsion beam axle and coil springs found in the aging Saveiro, following the example of the rival Fiat Strada that prioritizes cargo carrying capabilities over handling.

VW has yet to confirm powertrain options, but we expect the small truck to be powered by a mild-hybrid version of the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder TSI engine. The lineup could also include the non-electrified turbo 1.0-liter mill for entry-level trims, allowing them to be offered at a lower price point.

The full reveal is expected during the tournament this summer, with VW serving as a Brazilian National Team sponsor. The market launch will follow in the months after.

The Tukan is one of 21 new VW models slated for Latin America by 2028. It will be built at Volkswagen’s São José dos Pinhais plant in Paraná with roughly 76 percent local content. Its targets in the segment are the Fiat Strada and Toro, the Chevrolet Montana, and the upcoming Renault Niagara that was teased earlier this week.
