• A Ford official has downplayed the possibility of additional Raptor R variants.
  • Carl Widmann even suggested the Ranger Raptor is already too powerful.
  • The move means the Jeep Wrangler 392 will remain king of the hill.

Ford continues to expand the Bronco lineup as they recently introduced an upscale Filson variant. However, it appears fans shouldn’t expect a Bronco Raptor R.

Speaking to Road & Track, Ford Racing Production Vehicles Chief Engineer Carl Widmann said he wasn’t aware of any plans for Raptor R versions of the Bronco or Ranger. He went on to say the “Ranger Raptor might even already have too much power.”

More: The Ford Ranger Raptor Is 405 HP Of Awesomeness

That’s an interesting take as the truck has a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 producing 405 hp (302 kW / 411 PS) and 430 lb-ft (582 Nm) of torque. While that doesn’t sound overly impressive, it’s an outlier in the mid-size segment.

The Colorado, Canyon, and Frontier max out at 310 hp (231 kW / 314 PS), while the Tacoma offers up to 326 hp (243 kW / 331 PS). The Jeep Gladiator comes up short at 285 hp (213 kW / 289 PS), but Dodge is working on a new Dakota and the company recently confirmed plans for an SRT variant. However, it’s unclear if it will be a street truck like the 1500 Rumble Bee or an off-roader like the TRX.

While the Ranger Raptor is in a class of its own, the Bronco has stiff competition from Jeep. Their arch rival offers a Wrangler Moab 392 with a 6.4-liter V8 producing 470 hp (350 kW / 476 PS) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque.

That blows past the Bronco Raptor, which has 418 hp (312 kW / 424 PS) and 440 lb-ft (596 Nm) of torque. This puts the model in a tough spot as both off-roaders start at $79,995 before destination.
