Honda Civic Type R vs VW Golf GTI Clubsport S: Which Is Faster?

These two are the fastest front wheel-drive cars you can get right now, if you live in Europe.

Both of them have lapped the Nurburgring in under eight minutes, with the Golf stealing the crown from Honda after posting a 7:49.29 lap time in the German track.

Under the bonnet of the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S is a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with 306hp (310PS) and 380Nm (280 lb-ft) of peak torque. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 62mph (0-100km/h) in 5.8 seconds and up until it hits 164mph (265km/h).

The Japanese hot hatch also uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre unit which makes 306hp (310PS) and 295 lb ft of torque (400Nm). Honda claims it’ll hit the 62mph mark from a standstill in 5.7 seconds with its top speed set at 167mph (269km/h).

Both of them come with a six-speed manual and after looking at their specs, it’s not that hard to realize that these two will go neck to neck, at least on a straight line. Which one though is the fastest?

The Honda is quicker, the VW is faster.
This is a very good example of the difference between quick and fast.

    • Craig

EXACTLY what I was about to say!

    • Dustin

Unless you take fast to mean top speed.

      • Andrewthecarguy

        Explain…

      • Andrewthecarguy

        Exactly.

  • cooper

Not only is the civic slower. You also have the embarrassment of driving it around town. Civic looks like a jacked up high school mechanics shop special.

    • xDRAN0x

I think it’s a fail attempt for the Type R, especially when you see what the competition is offering.

      • cooper

        You are correct.

    • kevout

      That’s right.

Whereas the golf will allow to go shopping without 95% of people realizing what monster you are driving!

    • JimmyK

All the civic typers are never made for drag racing. The true environment
for them is the track. If you want a daily drive and a racer for traffic
light to an other go for the golf.If you want a daily drive but also a
track day car go for the civic. It is so simple. There are videos that test them in the track and the civic always has better lap times than the golf. And as for the appearance of the civic, everything on this car has a reason to be there it is not just for show off.

    • alexxx

1.civic is not slower, take it to the track and you will now…
2.civic looks very original, unlike golf which is looking the same for 15 years…
Not saying golf is bad,i had a chance to drive golf 5 gti and it was perfection…
Just dont be so shallow in expressing your opinion…unless you are 15…

      • cooper

Bottom line the majority of 15 yo’s would choose the boy racer civic over the golf. Children and teenager’s would love all those Hot Wheel like bits and pieces. Just try pickup up a girl for a date that is over the age of 22 in that clown looking civic. She’d probably wouldn’t even get into the car. Yes, I’m sure it is fun on a track.

        • Crixus Crasus

Cooper, Educate yourself. Education will cure your ignorance. Are you from Germany or some European country to be ranting like a typical big mouth immature ignorant scumbag? Most 15 yrs old can’t afford a car. In fact minimum age to get a license is 18 In Most countries. As for needing cars for picking girls or getting laid says a lot about your insecurities and trying to compensate for other things. You would most likely attract materialistic women looking for a sugar daddy. But even those girls would prefer Ferrari, Nsx, Corvette. Golf looks more ugly. Golf looks like a half egg ugly boxy POS boring car. Golf looks as ugly as hitlers face and most Golfs are driven by bald fat angry pissed off pathetic divorced European bastards. Most likely the Civic driver in this video can’t shift properly. Otherwise Civic is the faster car, Civic hits 60 in 5.4 in most other tests. Civic will be more reliable than typical unreliable garbage German car
vw Germans are incompetent lying cheaters.

          • cooper

That was hilarious. If you going to attempt putting someone down. At least us Grammer or spell check before hitting enter.

          • cooper

Oh look your cute picture. Most racists like yourself use such great grammar. Just a plain old racist which probably still lives at home because all those minorities took all the jobs. If you have any respect for yourself why would you use that picture?

      • KidRed

If by original you mean ugly, then yes, the Civic is original. The Golf hasn’t changed much because that’s the look that buyers like. Honda is chasing what buyers like and is failing miserably in the design department.

  • winnerx741

Same power and diffrent gears ratio settings and on the track the civic would school the gti
