Well, actually it’s more like a 1,307 horsepower race, hence the asterisk, because, unlike its rivals, the Dodge Hellcat is rear-wheel drive and the slippery road surface doesn’t do it any favors, either.

So, now that we’ve cleared this up, we’re looking at a drag race between the insanely powerful Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and the all-new BMW M5. Before moving on to the action, though, let’s see the numbers on those two.

FCA’s SUV uses the same 707hp and 645lb-ft (875Nm) of torque supercharged 6.2-liter V8 as the Hellcat. Naught to 60mph (96km/h) takes 3.5 seconds, top speed is 180mph (289km/h), and it can run the quarter mile faster than most of today’s performance vehicles, at 11.6 seconds and 116mph (187km/h).

Its supercar-slaying abilities make theGrand Cherokee Trackhawk an interesting adversary for the new BMW M5. Munich’s super sedan has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that churns out 600hp and 553lb-ft (748Nm) of torque. Despite having less power than the SUV, it’s much lighter, so it needs just 3.2sec to go from 0 to 60mph (0-96km/h) and has a top speed of 189mph (304km/h) when equipped with the M Driver’s Package.

So, are SUVs taking over the world of drag racing, too, or are performance sedans still faster? The answer lies in the video below – plus, the guys from TheFastLaneCar promised they will bring the Challenger Hellcat back once the weather warms up and give it a fighting chance.
