Lotus has announced it will launch the all-electric Type 130 hypercar in London on July 16 during an exclusive event, and has released a new teaser image and short video showing a close up of the rear that reveals the illuminated lettering and the charging port cover.

Dubbed the “world’s first British all-electric hypercar”, the Type 130 will be offered in just 130 examples, representing the number of Lotus “Types” launched during the 71-year-long history of the brand.

The new electric Lotus flagship will be built at the company’s home in Hethel, Norfolk, aiming to become the most “dynamically accomplished road car in the company’s history”.

Technical details are still unknown, but Lotus is expected to pull a few aces out of its sleeve in order to make the Type 130 a game-changing performer. Electric powertrains and their batteries are heavy things and the company is set to apply innovative engineering to counter-act that.

Lotus CEO Phil Popham even hinted that their hypercar’s battery modules might be removable in order to make it lighter for use on the track. “There are distinct benefits of electrification, certainly in terms of aerodynamics, and the center of gravity can be low. We need to understand the needs of the customer. If you’re driving for 20 minutes on track, do you need the full battery pack?” he said a couple of weeks ago.
