Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X Gains 296 HP Hybrid4 PHEV Powertrain With AWD

The Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X is now available in a range-topping Hybrid4 PHEV version with all-wheel drive.

Shared with the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 and 508 Hybrid4, the new plug-in hybrid powertrain finally gives the Grandland X the all-wheel-drive option it needed. The PHEV combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motors, one on each axle, and a 13.2 kWh lithium-ion battery for a system output of 300 PS (296 hp).

The gasoline engine produces 200 PS (197 hp) while the two electric motors make 80 kW (109 PS/108 hp) each. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second electric motor, inverter, and differential are integrated into the electrically powered rear axle providing AWD on demand.

Opel says the Grandland X Hybrid4 can cover up to 50 km (31 miles) in pure electric mode in the WLTP cycle. In total, the model offers four driving modes: electric, hybrid, AWD, and Sport. The plug-in hybrid crossover also features a regenerative braking system to recover the energy produced under braking or deceleration. Opel says this increases the all-electric range of the Grandland X Hybrid4 by up to 10 percent on average.

For maximum energy recuperation, the driver can even switch to “Regeneration on Demand,” which also allows for the so-called one pedal driving. Thanks to all these measures, the Grandland X Hybrid4 is expected to average 2.2 l/100 km (128.4 mpg UK) and 49 g/km CO2.

The electrified crossover will go on sale in Europe within the next weeks, with the first customer deliveries expected in early 2020. The Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X Hybrid4 will contribute to the electrification of Opel’s and Vauxhall’s entire product portfolios by 2024. The new model is also part of the carmakers’ strategy for meeting future CO2 targets.

OK 2,2 liters of consumption withe batteries fully charged but the consumprtion of the combustión engine alone without electricty? about 6,7 or 7 liters? because we are talking about a gasoline 1.6 engine with 200 horsepower

so its eAWD….. better than nothing but not so efective as mechanical AWD.

    • uS’gedlemba

Unless you are talking about 4WD, eAWD or AWD is the same thing, difference is the source powering the other two wheels. This is fairly a recent application of technology, I’m interested in knowing what makes a mechanical AWD better?

      • salamOOn

“what makes a mechanical AWD better?”

usable torque and power. you can send (where you need it) much more torque and power with mechanical AWD than with eAWD when you are usually stuck with small and weak electric motor at the back, and which wont help you in difficult situations….

Nice but it’s no substitute for real 4WD.

I thought this was the Bolt at first glance. All these cars look alike. They all blend into mediocrity. Meh.

Wonder if this power-train will go into the Insignia too.

      Not in the current generation.

Notice it’s now using a Peugeot gear stick and DS style button

Two tone paint is new too

    • yes, was designed with PSA from the start, so if it was pridictable, it was also perhaps the easiest car at Opel to redesign as a PSA product.

    • by the way lol that drive mode button from the DS really doesn’t go in this car, the design has nothing to do with the rest of GM parts.

Heh! This would make a great Saturn Vue, don’t ya think?…or maybe a Buick?

    • Saturn too late… Funny saw a Sturn Vue V6 the other day in Paris was wondering who would spend money on importing a bad American SUV when you have its cousins Opel and Chevy for cheap here… OK Stop me, as For the Buick, yes it could, but probably won’t happen, this was made with PSA from the start, too much PSA in it, Making it a Buick would be nighmare for parts in NA. Unless PSA and GM extend their collaboration further than the curent Buick lineup, You won’t see new Opels badged as Buick in the States.

PS Last generation Saturn Vue (and Chevrolet Captiva) was an Opel, most current model Buick cars are Opels too. All very nice vehicles. And the Saturn Vue you saw may have just been a Opel with Saturn decals.
