Our spy photographers have managed to snap the all-electric BMW iX3 out testing once again, this time sitting on a set of aerodynamic wheels that will be an available option.

The German car manufacturer recently previewed the aerodynamic wheels developed for the iX3, revealing that they will reduce drag by 5 per cent over the wheels of a standard X3 and lower the power consumption of the iX3 by 2 per cent in the European WLTP test cycle. This promises to increase the vehicle’s range by 6.2 miles (10 km).

The aerodynamic wheels of this prototype includes sharp gloss black spokes offset with matte black plastic elements aiming to improve airflow. It remains to be seen if these wheels are production-ready, as they appear a little rough around the edges.

At least one other BMW iX3 prototype was snapped during winter testing, this time sitting on a set of more conventional wheels.

Late last year it was revealed that the iX3 uses a 74 kWh battery pack which will be good for more than 273 miles (440 km) of range in the WLTP test cycle. This battery pack feeds an electric motor offering up 282 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque to the rear wheels.

Production of the iX3 is set to kick off later this year in China through the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture. The electric SUV will be the first from BMW to use its fifth-generation eDrive technology, with the i4 and iNext EVs following in 2021.
