There was a time when Mazda’s ambitions to achieve luxury car manufacturer status were out in the open and not at all unclear like today.

In 1989, Mazda went ahead and launched the Eunos upscale brand in Japan and kept it until 1996, with the automaker also making an unsuccessful attempt in 1991 at releasing an Amati luxury brand in North America.

Several models were sold under the Eunos marque, including the first-generation of their beloved Roadster, which the rest of the world got as the Mazda MX-5 Miata (NA). In 1993, a very special Eunos Roadster launched in Japan, the “S Limited”. It featured black bodywork, a red leather interior and exclusive alloys.

2020 Mazda MX-5 Eunos Edition

Today, Mazda France pays tribute to the Eunos Roadster S Limited with the 2020 MX-5 Eunos Edition. Limited to only 110 units for the French market, the Eunos Edition echoes the specification of its ancestor. It sports a Jet Black Mica body color, Burgundy Nappa perforated leather upholstery and exclusive Rays forged alloy wheels.

The limited-run roadster also features numbered badges on the front fenders and dashboard, as well as the key fob. The Mazda MX-5 Eunos Edition will arrive in French dealerships in April with a fixed price of €34,600 ($39,300). That’s a €5,700 ($6,500) premium over the base MX-5 Elegance trim level sold in France.

Given the stricter emission standards in Europe, Mazda only offers the limited edition MX-5 with the smaller Skyactiv-G 1.5 four-cylinder engine, delivering 132 PS (130 HP) to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. It would have been nice to be able to have it with the 184 PS (181 HP) Skyactiv-G 2.0 engine too, don’t you think? Still, kudos to Mazda France for the idea.
