Thought the BMW M2 CS was the ultimate expression of the 2-Series? Well, this custom BMW M2 Convertible from German tuning shop Lightweight Performance may have something to say about that.

BMW Blog reports that this M2 Convertible was first built a few years ago but has since been updated to offer performance even beyond that of the M2 CS.

Starting out life as a regular 2-Series Convertible, the M2’s turbocharged N55 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine has been slotted in under the hood and upgraded to 428 HP. That’s slightly down on the 444 HP offered up by the twin-turbo six of the M2 CS. The transmission, axles, and brakes were also lifted off a regular M2 and fitted to make sure the droptop has the hardware to support the added grunt.

Lightweight Performance then turned to the aftermarket to continue the upgrades and have fitted new Bilstein coilovers as well as a hood, front splitter, rear diffuser, lip spoiler, and other parts made from carbon fiber. There are also a set of wheels measuring 20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

German publication AutoBild recently took out the one-off to the Sachsenring and recorded a lap time of just 1:34.15, slightly quicker than the best time recorded by an M2 CS at 1:34.98.

It’s unclear how much the car’s owner paid to originally buying the 2-Series Convertible and have it extensively upgraded but it’s certainly possible the project cost more than a new M2 CS would. Nevertheless, having a convertible with such impressive performance is a recipe that’s hard to beat.
