Mercedes-Benz has previewed the innovative Head-Up Display system of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class that will feature augmented reality.

Like most other Head-Up Display systems on the market, the one used by the S-Class will display things like speed and whether or not the radar cruise control and lane-keeping assist systems are enabled. Where the Mercedes system will separate itself from others currently available is how it will use ‘virtual distance elements’ when the Active Distance Assist Distronic function is enabled.

In addition, the Head-Up Display will include animated red warning lines if the driver starts to swerve out of their lane. However, its most impressive feature will be the Augmented Reality Navigation.

This innovative function will use a selection of blue arrows that look as though they are floating above the road. When you’re approaching a turn, the blue arrows will fly off into the distance and float above the road where you will turn. Once you reach your destination, a floating blue point will appear on the display.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be a technological tour de force. Inside, things will be drastically different than the outgoing model and include a new 12.8-inch portrait-oriented central display. There will also be a 3D digital instrument panel and up to three screens for rear-seat passengers.

Many of the car’s innovative features will focus on safety. For example, the S-Class will be the first vehicle with frontal airbags for rear-seat passengers. These airbags will be located in the back of the front seats and deploy automatically in the event of a collision.

Mercedes-Benz has already announced that it will unveil the new S-Class on September 2.
