The Tesla Model S could be viewed as the single car that made electric vehicles ‘cool.’ It has become so appealing that even James May, the world’s most unfashionable person, owns one.

As we’ve covered in the past, the veteran British journalist and broadcaster owners a dark blue Model S 100D Long Range. Yeah, it’s not the flagship Performance model that typically attracts all of the headlines, but the 100D Long Range is still an impressive thing in its own right. It’s not without its faults, as May describes in his latest video.

May’s first complaint is that the car is filthy. Evidently, it wouldn’t be so filthy if he cleaned it but that’s beside the point. His second complaint is a little more genuine. May says he has set the car so the door handles automatically ‘present’ themselves when he is close to the car. However, this is a rather pointless function as he needs to tap the door handle before they slide out.

Another complaint he has relates to the powertrain setup of the Model S, as well as most other electric vehicles. When he jumps out of the car to open the gate at his property, he doesn’t like the fact that the car switches off almost immediately. He would rather it stay switched on, as an ICE-powered vehicle would.

Another complaint that would also annoy us is the fact that when you press the button to close the trunk, it lets out a loud beep. May suggests this is for safety reasons but it is still annoying nonetheless.

Arguably the most significant concern May has relates to a loud ‘clonk’ sound he can hear from the rear of the car, as if a bushing or a driveshaft was worn. He says his Model S isn’t the only one he has experienced this sound from. In fact, all Model Ss that he has driven have the same issue.
