BMW has confirmed that it is developing an M version of the all-electric i4 sedan.

The German automaker is expected to unveil the i4 before the end of the year and, in standard form, the EV is tipped to offer some very impressive performance. In fact, reports claim it will have a pair of electric motors that produce a combined output of 523 hp, allowing it to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in approximately 4 seconds.

While that will no doubt by enough power for most customers, BMW M chief executive Markus Flasch recently told Car Advice that an M model is being readied to launch.

“Next year we will launch the first battery-electric M car in the performance segment, based on the i4, as something to confirm,” Flasch revealed. “Then we’re working on hybrid electrified performance and high-performance cars, but it is too early to disclose which ones it is going to be.”

It remains to be seen how much power the BMW i4 M could have but Flasch was keen to point out that the automaker will still consider the M3 and M4 as higher performance models with the i4 M sitting one rung below them. Flasch said this is simply because BMW doesn’t have the battery technology to surpass a combustion engine M car.

“On the high-performance battery-electric technology, there is still some time that we need until technology is ready and can take it on with an existing high performance car, like an M3 or M4,” he said. “This will take some more time, but we’re working on that.”
