Subaru unveiled the redesigned BRZ in November and now the company has introduced a new racing variant in Japan.

Set to compete in the Super GT300 class, the race car features an aggressive exterior with canards and a front splitter. The model has also been equipped with a new front bumper, a ventilated hood and yellow headlights.

The changes don’t stop there as the racer features a widebody kit and lightweight windows. We can also see minimalist mirrors and what appears to be an escape hatch on the roof.

While the rear end draws inspiration from the road-going BRZ, it’s far more extreme as we can see a two-tier diffuser and a massive rear wing. Other notable highlights include lightweight BBS wheel and carbon fiber body panels.

Little is known about the race car at this point, but the 2022 BRZ will go on sale in the United States next fall and feature a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that develops 228 hp (170 kW / 231 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. It can be paired to either a six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic with a new Sport mode. Regardless of which gearbox is selected, both send power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.

Besides the new powertrain and improved styling, the 2022 BRZ features a stiffer chassis which borrows elements from the Subaru Global Platform. The model also features a lightweight design as uses aluminum for the front fenders, roof and hood. Thanks to this focus, the coupe is slated to weigh less than 2,900 lbs (1,315 kg).
