Controversial grille notwithstanding, most journalists seem to agree that the new BMW M4 an excellent car to drive. However, most reviews concerned the flagship Competition variant, meaning this video of the entry-level model is well worth watching.

Like the Competition, the base M4 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder. However, whereas the Competition has 503 hp and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque, the base model is capped at 473 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm). The biggest differentiating factor between the two, however, is the fact that the base model is offered with a six-speed manual transmission.

One of the first things that these two reviewers note about the new car is that it does feel quite a lot larger than its predecessor. They also note that it is very, very quick, although they both agree that the old car didn’t exactly feel like it needed any more power.

The six-speed manual gearbox is also received positively by both reviewers as it has a nice shifting action and weight to it. While it isn’t as good as the shifter of the Honda Civic Type R, it is still good. In the end, though, as competitive as the M4 is, Matt Farah concludes that the M2 CS is a better car.
