Volkswagen has confirmed the unveiling of the 2021 Polo for April 22, at 11:00 a.m. CET (5:00 a.m. EST), releasing an official rendering that previews the updated front end styling of the supermini.

The illustration puts the spotlight on the new headlamp design that is a bit slimmer compared to the outgoing model, with a more modern LED DRL signature. The two clusters appear to be joined together by a thin light strip, interrupted by the corporate logo that sits on a slightly updated grille.

The prototype spied testing in the open at the beginning of the year revealed a new rear end, with more elongated taillights inspired by the Golf Mk8. The tailgate has much softer lines and the new bumper ends with a different diffuser that has fake exhaust trim. It’s been reported that the facelifted 2021 Polo will display its name in the middle of the tailgate, under the ‘VW’ logo, just like its larger sibling, and it will probably get new wheels and perhaps a revised color palette too.

We have yet to see the cabin of Volkswagen’s Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 208 and Mazda2 rival, but it will get a few updates, with the automaker stating that “new technologies are finding their way in, instruments are becoming more digital and, thanks to greater networking, the inhabitants are ‘always on’.”

The engine family will probably carry over, though some units could get mild-hybrid assistance. The 197 HP and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque, 2.0-liter turbo-four powering the Polo GTI is expected to be retained.
