Update: As some readers have pointed out, this is actually the shifter of the Genesis X Concept. The shifter of the GV60 is virtually identical.

A few days ago, Genesis officially previewed its long-awaited GV60 electric crossover, the luxurious sibling to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Beyond its striking exterior design, one of the vehicle’s most intriguing features is its shifter, which Genesis refers to as the ‘Crystal Sphere.’

This intriguing shifter was showcased in images by Genesis and recently, an animation of it in action has hit the web. It is quite extraordinary and certainly a cool party piece for the crossover.

When the GV60 is in neutral, the Crystal Sphere sits as a glass orb with complex ambient lighting. Once the car is turned on, the shifter spins around, revealing a dial that can be twisted to the right to enable Drive and twisted to the left to enable Reverse. This shifter also includes the button for Park and a toggle to adjust the drive mode.

It is unlike anything we have seen in the industry and an intriguing point of difference between the GV60 and all of its rivals. Admittedly, its operation is definitely more complex than a traditional shifter but we suspect Genesis has developed some kind of failsafe so it doesn’t get stuck in its glass orb position.

Beyond the shifter, we know that the GV60 shares its E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) architecture with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 and should be offered with the same battery packs and motor configurations, although Genesis has yet to announce these details.
