- Black Box 4×4 revealed two custom Land Cruiser 70 builds.
- Both use LED lights sourced from the Land Rover Defender.
- Each model gets ARB gear, suspension, and 35-inch tires.
The Land Cruiser 70 Series may be long in the tooth, but its appeal as a rugged off-roader shows no signs of fading, at least outside America, where it’s still sold. Recently, Toyota gave the classic SUV a subtle refresh that left earlier versions looking even more outdated. Now, Blackbox Custom 4×4 has stepped in with its own update, drawing inspiration from an unexpected rival.
The Costa Rican shop has unveiled two bespoke creations, an LC76 Wagon and an LC79 Pickup. Both trade their factory halogen headlights for a set of custom LEDs sourced from the latest Land Rover Defender. The new units fit neatly into the original headlight housings, meaning no alterations to the bodywork were required.

The semi-circular LED design sits surprisingly well on the Land Cruiser’s upright front end, offering a clean contrast against the darkened headlight housings. They might not have the standout look of the facelifted model’s retro-style round LEDs, but they do add a modern touch.

Trail-Ready Upgrades
Blackbox didn’t stop with lighting. Both vehicles get a comprehensive exterior and chassis upgrade package designed to enhance off-road performance.
The beige LC76 Wagon features an ARB off-road bumper with an integrated winch, a bull bar, additional LEDs, and a blacked-out grille. It’s also equipped with black fender extensions, a roof rack, and a snorkel. More significantly, it rides on an upgraded suspension with Dobinsons springs and remote reservoirs, paired with black wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires.

The LC79 Pickup gets a similar treatment, though its metal bumpers are painted white to match the bodywork. Its 16-inch black alloy wheels have a multi-spoke design and are fitted with chunkier mud-terrain tires. The suspension setup differs slightly, with Old Man Emu BP-51 internal bypass shocks up front and traditional leaf springs in the rear.

Powertrains
In terms of powertrains, the LC79 Pickup is equipped with a 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel producing 202 hp (151 kW / 205 PS) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox and a full-time 4WD system.

The LC76 Wagon’s engine isn’t officially specified, but the absence of V8 badging and its production year point to a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter inline-six diesel. That engine produces 129 hp (96 kW / 131 PS) and 285 Nm (210 lb-ft) of torque, also paired with a manual gearbox.
Both vehicles pictured here have already been sold, but Blackbox has other modified Land Cruisers available for purchase. Prices are not publicly listed, though given the level of customization involved, it’s safe to assume they fall well outside the entry-level bracket.
